Le Mouvement

Dara Friedman

The work of the American, Miami-based artist Dara Friedman (b. 1968) revolves around experimental, non-narrative techniques in film. In Dancer, she examines possible interpretations of performance, from pure improvisation to fixed choreography, with dancers as diverse as clubbers and ballet dancers. She cleverly uses Miami as both a place and a stage. Friedman, who cites the German choreographer Pina Bausch as a source of inspiration, uses changes of tempo to make her audiences so complicit that they themselves become dancers too.
